Loose Wedding Flowers

Materials needed

  • Box large enough to accommodate your packing method
  • Shoe boxes or collapsible gift boxes
  • Water tubs for the flower stems
  • Plastic sandwich bags, paper towel, rubber bands or scotch tape
  • Duct tape
  • Frozen gel ice bags (found in department stores in Sporting Goods or Housewares)
  • Styrofoam peanuts for packing
  • Packing tape

Instructions

  1. Select a box large enough to hold packing peanuts that will surround the inner boxes that contain the wedding flowers.
  2. Use a shoe box or a collapsible gift box large enough to accommodate the size of your flowers. Be sure the box is deep enough to close over any large flowers. (large lilies, hibiscus, bird of paradise, etc.)
  3. Clip the end of the stems of each flower about 1/2 inch and place a water tube, filled with water, on the freshly cut stem so the stem is well down into the water. Some flower stems will be too big for even the largest water tubes. For these flowers, thoroughly saturate a paper towel with water and wrap it around the freshly cut stem to preserve its freshness. Place a plastic sandwich bag around the wet paper towel, then wrap a rubber band around the top part of the bag to hold it securely to the stem of the flower. (You may use scotch tape but rubber bands are more secure.)
  4. Tape the water tube to the floor of the shoe box or gift box, with duct tape loosely enough not to crush the flower head, but securely enough that the flower does not move. Stagger the bridal flowers so you can fit as many in a box as possible.
  5. Reserve a couple of spaces in the box to place the ice gel bags. Tape the ice bags to the lid of the box, if there is space, so they don’t touch the wedding flowers, or tape them to the floor of the box but be sure they do not touch the flower heads.
  6. When you place the lid on the box, you can stack another box of flowers on top of it, but tape the boxes together to stabilize them. Tape them to the floor of the shipping box. Fill the shipping box with packing peanuts and prepare it securely to ship.
  7. You must ship overnight express to preserve as much freshness of the wedding flowers as possible!!
